🧭 Navigation Instrument // Cardinal Decision Matrix

The Cardinal Compass

A choice can move you forward and still pull you away from the life you want. The Cardinal Compass helps you slow down and check the choice from four directions: where you want to go, what you need today, what you must care for, and what your choice leaves behind.

The Cardinal Compass is the instrument. The Spiral is the journey.

1. Write one choice. 2. Check North, East, South, and West. 3. Pick −1, 0, or +1 for each direction. 4. Read the Center Scan. 5. Choose your next step. You can come back later.

Arrival // Bring One Real Choice

Step 1: Put one choice at the Center.

Use one real choice. It can be small or big. You do not need to know the answer yet. The Compass does not decide for you. It helps you see what supports the choice, what does not, and what is still unclear.

Not sure what is happening yet? Open the W5H Key.

W5H helps you get the facts and name the situation. It does not choose for you. Use it before the Compass when the situation feels confusing.

Step 2: Check all four directions.

We often ask the question we care about most and forget the others. The Compass asks you to check all four. Center is not another direction. Center means the four answers can work together.

CENTER Awaiting Bearings 0 / 4 examined
NORTH // NORTH STAR

Where do I want my life to go?

Does this choice help me move toward the life I want?

The Compass cannot choose your North Star for you. Your North Star is the life, direction, or future that matters to you.

EAST // PRESENT LIFE

What do I need in my life today?

If I make this choice, can I live with what it creates right now?

The future matters, but today matters too. A choice should not keep harming the person who has to live through it now.

SOUTH // STEWARDSHIP

What needs my care?

Does this choice care for what matters now and help build what comes next?

Stewardship means taking good care of what is in your hands now while also preparing for the future.

WEST // ANCESTOR · LEGACY

What kind of ancestor am I being?

What will this choice place into other people, places, or the future after me?

Legacy is not only what people remember after you die. You build legacy now through the way you treat people, care for family, serve, create, give, practice faith, and help your community.

Choose one answer for each direction. This is not a test and there is no grade. −1 means “this choice works against this direction.” 0 means “I am not sure yet.” +1 means “this choice supports this direction.”

Deepening Lens // I + AM + Being

Step 3: Ask who you are practicing being.

This part is optional. Use it when the choice also touches your identity, values, faith, Source, the Divine, or a deeper sense of meaning.

Departure // Carry the Choice into the Spiral

Step 4: Choose your next step.

The Compass can help you see the choice more clearly, but you still decide what to do. If one direction pulls away, go back to that question. If all four support the choice, choose one next step. You can return to the Compass later if new information appears.

Awareness Reflection Meaning Action Embodiment

The Cardinal Compass is a reflection tool. You are still the decision-maker. A score, an AI, a system, or another person should not take that choice away from you. Sometimes every option has a cost. The Compass helps you see that cost before you choose.
